BLEPHAROPLASTY

Eyelid surgery (medical term is blepharoplasty) is usually performed to remove excess skin and/or fat from the upper and the lower eyelids. It can help to freshen up the look of tired baggy looking eyes or droopy eyelid. Patients who asked for eyelid surgery are usually in their late thirties to seventies but younger patients sometimes require them as well. Older patients who have difficulty with vision due to sagging upper eyelid skin is also a candidate for this procedure. . Asian blepharoplasty or double eyelid surgery is a slightly different procedure where the goal is to create an upper eyelid crease in usually young Asian girls. The technical steps and after surgery care is almost the same as in a conventional blepharoplasty

The surgery is usually performed under local anaesthesia although it can also be performed under general anaesthesia if the patient requests it or there are other procedures that require to be done at the same time. The incision is made in the upper eye lid crease for an upper blepharoplasty and just beneath the eye lash for a lower blepharoplasty. The surgery takes less than an hour for either an upper or a lower eyelid and slightly more if both are done. It is done as a day case and the patient can go home on the same day. Wound healing progress at different rates for different people. After the surgery, there will be some swelling and bruising which will usually resolve in 2 to 3 weeks. Depending on individuals there might also be drying of the eyes that can cause temporary redness and slight blurring of vision. This will all resolve with time. The patient will be advised on how to take care of the wound and usually prescribed with antibiotic ointment and eye drops if required.
